Supervisor May Move County Barn

Speaking at a recessed supervisor meeting Tuesday in Coffeeville, District 4 Supervisor Timothy Booker said he is considering relocating his county barn. Booker said a break-in last weekend was a factor in the potential move. The county barn is currently located on Hwy. 51 on property adjacent to the old Oakland school. The potential new location would on County Road 211, east of Coffeeville.

COFFEEVILLE– The District 4 county barn could move to a new location following a request by Supervisor Timothy Booker. Speaking at a recessed meeting Tuesday at the Coffeeville courthouse, Booker explained he had a break-in at the shop last weekend and a pickup truck, a chain saw, power washer and weedeater was stolen.

“Down there is a bad place,” Booker explained, adding that there is little traffic in the area in the early morning hours. The shop is located on property adjacent to the old Oakland School, south of Oakland on Hwy. 51. Booker suggested utilizing county-owned property east of Oakland at the intersection of County Roads 216 and 211. A building originally erected almost 15 years ago is unused and would be centrally located in District 4, according to Booker.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting Yalobusha EMA Director Frank Hyde said the building was initially constructed to house a fire department, but was never used. Hyde also said he supported Booker’s request to use the building.

Board Attorney John Crow advised the move would not require board action.

“He can do it on his own,” Crow advised.

“It sounds like you have everybody’s support,” Board President Cayce Washington added.

Booker also said he would like to see the Oakland school building on Hwy. 51 torn down at some point in the future.

“You go down there at night, there are folks in there. It isn’t a good feeling,” Booker said about the old school grounds. The building was previously leased by a community action group, but the lease was terminated after county officials determined there was asbestos in some portions of the building.
