Devils Defeated By Independence

There are two kinds of people in this world – those that are scared and those that aren’t. – Football Coach Trent Hammond

When the Blue Devils were down by 33 points in the first half, Head Coach Trent Hammond challenged his young squad.

“I asked them what kind of players they were going to be,” Hammond said.

And his squad, at times fielding seven ninth-graders and an eighth-grader against a seasoned Independence Wildcat team, did not lay down.

Hammond said his squad fought harder, scoring two touchdowns and sticking until the end in the lopsided Friday night lineup.

The Blue Devils ultimately fell by a score of 53-12 with several of their key seniors out with injuries.

Facing Wildcat senior running backs Lacy Jackson and James Shorty, the young Blue  Devil squad was outgunned. The Wildcats also field a senior quarterback and senior receiver who caught two touchdown passes.

First Half

Independence quickly set the pace for the night, scoring three touchdowns in their first four possessions.

Special teams continued to cause the Blue Devil squad problems, as the Wildcats off-center onside kicking followed each touchdown. With this approach, the Wildcats were able to recover the ball after their second touchdown.

In the Wildcats fourth possession, the Blue Devils were able to hold the team on their first set of downs.

Following an Independence punt, the Blue Devils started their drive on their own 38-yard-line and marched the ball all the way to the Wildcat’s seven-yard-line.

An interception gave the ball back to the Wildcats who scored two plays later, bringing the score to 26 – 0 with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.

The last score in the half came following another interception, and the score at half was 33 – 0.

Second Half

The Blue Devils were able to put six on the scoreboard after going for it on fourth and three when quarterback Leo Daniels made a 35 yard run into the endzone.

In another fourth down situation, the Blue Devils second score came when Daniels connected to Trey Lowe in a 20-yard touchdown pass.

The Wildcats final score came from a 70-yard-run with less than a minute in the game, sealing their victory by a margin of 41 points.

Friday Night

Friday night the Blue Devils will again face stiff opposition as they travel to Senatobia to face the tough 3A school. Last week Senatobia defeated Oxford.

“They have a very good tailback,” Hammond said about Senatobia.

“He rushed for 246 yards against Oxford last Friday,” Hammond continued, adding,, “It is going to be a challenge,”         “We have got to be physical and can’t shy away.”

And, again, the Blue Devil squad will be fielding a young squad.

    Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
