“Now Entering a Certified Main Street Community”

Water Valley is the newest member of the Mississippi Main Street Association – and we have MDOT signs to prove it!

Welcome to the first Main Street column. Over the next months I’ll be writing about what the Water Valley Main Street Association (WVMSA) is doing and also about events and promotions going on in our Main Street District.

From small beginnings come great things. Small businesses are one of the main reasons for the economic success of the United States. According to the Small Business Administration, they create 2 of every 3 new jobs, produce 39% of the gross national product, and invent more than half the nation’s technological innovation.

Main Street members have been busy since our designation Ceremony held on August 30.  WVMSA’s Economic Restructuring Committee is assembling a building inventory and a business directory, and our Promotions Committee is making plans for the Farmers Market next spring.

Not to mention we’re having our very first Main Street event – a downtown pep rally to celebrate Water Valley High School Homecoming (see photo, page 16).

“Remember When” is the theme and the rally will be in Railroad Park on Thursday, October 11 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The homecoming game will be the following night when the Blue Devils go up against the Williams-Sullivan “Yellow Jackets” from Durant.

There will be concessions, music by the Water Valley High School Band, performances by the junior high and high school cheerleaders and Devil Dolls and some surprises you’ll have to see to believe!

We’re also working on our new WVMSA office located at 207 N. Main. Come by and check out our work in progress!

We still have room for volunteers! If you’d like to become an active part of the future of downtown Water Valley, contact Water Valley Main Street Association at 473-6767 or jessiemgurner@yahoo.com.
