Exciting Activities Planned For Founders Day As Water Valley Celebrates Sesquicentennial
By Jessie Gurner
April 19 will be the biggest birthday party ever held in Water Valley as we celebrate our Sesquicentennial.
Do you realize that 150 years ago, when the City of Water Valley was chartered, that the USA was only 82 years old and had just 32 states?
This is a birthday party that has been 150 years in the making. Founders Day will be full of activities for the entire family! Our “birthday party” comes complete with a softball tournament, a 5K Run, a host old-fashioned games, a fashion show, birthday cakes, a pet parade, food, lots of music and fireworks.
There’s even going to be a hot dog eating contest!
Several groups and churches have already signed up to participate, but there’s still room for other civic organizations, church groups, and businesses who would like to have a booth or sell food.
Also as part of the celebration WVMSA and the North Mississippi Herald are sponsoring a photo contest. A first, second and third Place will be awarded in the following categories: Black and White, Landscape and Nature, People, Architecture, Pets and From the Attic.
Submitted photographs will be displayed during Founders Day at WVMSA office and winners will appear in the newspaper. Call, come by or email the WVMSA office for details and an entry form.
If you’d like more information about the softball tournament being sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, contact Ron Hart at Mid-Town Auto Parts at 473-4333.
And don’t forget about the Time Capsule. Everyone is encouraged to submit an item that represents his or her family, organization, school, church, or place of business. You can bring them to the WVMSA office at 207 N. Main.
