Home-Owned Grocery Store Vital To Community

By Jessie Gurner

Because of my schedule, I usually shop for food in the evening while the grocery store is less crowded. But last Saturday I did some mid-day shopping at Larson’s with a store filled with people. It made me realize that for Water Vallians our home-owned Piggly Wiggly is a lot more than just a place to buy food.

While I was picking up apples, I overheard two moms setting up a play date for their children. Down in dairy products as I was buying milk, I heard an offer of a ride to church and a promise of prayer for an ill family member.

Over a couple of aisles somewhere between the instant pudding and the cake mixes a group of ladies were exchanging recipes. (I should have stopped and copied down the one for caramel pie because it sounded delicious!) At the meat counter two families met, talked for a moment, and suddenly plans were being made for a cookout.  Over at the bakery counter, a birthday cake was picked up and congratulations offered by everyone to the birthday girl.

It is moments like these that remind me of why I enjoy living in a small town.  We all remember the big events in our lives, but I think it’s important to appreciate all the smaller moments in between. It is those multiplied small moments with family and friends that are the most important.
