Folson Chosen For 2008 All-Area Team
Six-foot three-inch A. J. Folson, junior forward for the Water Valley High School Blue Devils Basketball Team has been named a member of the 2008 All-Area Team.
Folson helped lead the Blue Devils to 17 wins and a spot in the Class 2A playoffs this season. Prior to this season, Water Valley had only won five games over the previous three years. With Folson averaging 16.3 points per game, the Blue Devils were able to end their five-year post-season drought.
Folson also averaged 6.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game for the Blue Devils and shot 56.6 percent from the floor inside the 3-point arc.
A. J. is the son of Katina Johnson of Water Valley and Tyrone Folson of Oxford.
Also selected for this prestigious team were Oxford High School Chargers Keith Searcy, Dan Hicks, Justin Gilliard and Kenny Mullin, Jr. The Chargers are coached by Drew Tyler, whose parents, Dale and Bob Tyler are Water Valley residents.
Blue Devils Named To All-Region Team
Three Water Valley Blue Devils were named to the All-Region 2-2A Basketball team recently. Juniors Benny Weekley and A. J. Folson each made the first team, while Senior Jonathan Nevol was named an honorable mention.
Folson led the Blue Devils, who went 17-15 on the year and advanced to the region tournament finals, as well as the Class 2A playoffs, with an average of 16.3 points per game.
Weekley averaged 11.4 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, and recorded 95 steals and 93 assists on the year.
