Practice is scheduled to start in June for the newly formed Pop Warner football teams in Water Valley – dubbed the Water Valley Titans.
Thirty-eight children registered last weekend, signing on in two different age groups for the full contact game, according to event organizer Ralph Horton. The age groups are 6 to 9 years old and 10 to 13 years old.
Pop Warner is the nation’s largest football program and the Water Valley team will compete with teams from Oxford, Byhalia, Mound Pleasant, Holly Springs, West Jackson, Greenville and other areas.
A fundraiser was held last weekend in conjunction with the sign-up.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support during our fundraiser,” Horton said. “We are still a little short of our goal, but with your help we know we will reach it and go beyond.”
Practice will begin in late June and the first game is in mid-August. The Water Valley School District agreed to let the teams use the Blue Devil home field to host one or more games in the season.
Games alternate between the towns in the district, according to Horton.
“This will not interfere with baseball all stars,” Horton said. “The season will run from mid-August through mid-November.”
Horton said there is still time to register for the team or cheerleader squad. For more information contact Horton at 832-1830 or Bobby Phillips at 473-6363.
