House Bill Provides Additional Funding For Bridge Repair, Rural Fire Truck Acquisition
By Tommy Reynolds
I strongly supported and cosponsored a house bill which would provide for a ninth round for the Rural Fire Truck Acquisition Program. This Program has already helped to get eight fire trucks each for Yalobusha, Tallahatchie and Lafayette Counties. The Program will provide a $70,000 state grant which can be matched by local or Federal funding. I cosponsored the original appropriation bill which provided funds to acquire the first fire trucks under this Program, and I have continued to support the continuation of this Program over the years.
I believe that every dollar spent on fire protection for our rural areas and small towns helps to protect the lives and safety of our people. I am very pleased that many rural areas in our district either have or will be on the verge of getting more favorable fire ratings due to better fire protection capacity of the areas.
Last week I voted for passage of HB 1722 which would provide funding for repairs and renovations for university and community college facilities, the Rural Fire Truck Acquisition Program and would provide for repair of substandard state bridges.
Mississippi has 202 bridges that have been cited as deficient and 97 of these bridges require immediate attention according to engineering experts so that the public will not be jeopardized. I strongly support funding deficient state bridges, and I also support continued funding for the assistance program that the state has provided to counties for bridge replacement of deficient county bridges.
