The Water Valley Junior High football teams continued their winning ways as they traveled to Pope Middle School on Tuesday, September 8, to face the Bulldogs. The two teams won a combined 33-6 as they both improved their records to (2-0) on the young season.
The eighth grade team built a 27-0 halftime lead, using a strong defensive effort and the ground attack led by Cortaveus Hawkins and his offensive line. The defense, which allowed only one first down due to a penalty in the first half, was led by Hunter Stanford and Nicki St. Romain with five total tackles each.
Also having strong defensive outings were Lee Mitchell, with three total tackles, a forced fumble, and a sack, and James Washington with four total tackles.
Hunter Stanford opened up the scoring with an 11-yard rushing touchdown and E.J. Bounds added the extra point. K.J. Lee would soon follow suit with a 21-yard rushing touchdown and Bounds added another P.A.T. Stanford added his second rushing touchdown of the half with an impressive 16-yard rush and another Bounds P.A.T.
Hawkins added a six-yard rushing score as the first half expired, which was setup by a 41-yard pass from Quarterback Bounds to Tight End James Washington that reached the six yard line. Hawkins finished the evening with 115 yards rushing.
The second half had an inauspicious start as the reserve offensive unit quickly had a turnover which setup the Bulldogs with a first and ten at their eleven yard line. Though, the defense made them work for it, Pope punched the ball across the end zone line on a 3rd and Goal from the one-yard line. Cole Camp ended the scoring threat with an Interception on the 2-point try.
To close out the game, E.J. Bounds scored on a three-yard Quarterback keeper and Gary Bolden scored on a 40-yard rush. The Blue Devils will be back in action on Monday, September 14 at home versus the Calhoun City Wildcats.
