Junior High Blue Devils Continue Winning Streak

Staff Report

The 7th grade Blue Devils moved their mark to (3-0) in 2009 with a 32-0 victory over the visiting Calhoun City Wildcats on Monday, September 14.

While the defense did not allow a first down the entire contest, the offense put up 32 consecutive points.

Defensively, the Blue Devils were paced by linebackers Dee McNeal and Sherrod Rucker who both posted six total tackles. Offensively, fullback Warren Draper and quarterback Brandon Bounds led the team in rushing, while running back Deon Hilliard led with two touchdowns.

The 8th grade also was victorious and continued their undefeated streak with a 38-8 victory over the Wildcats.

For the first time in their playing careers, this team found themselves trailing in a game. Calhoun City took their opening drive and punched it and the two-point conversion in the endzone to take an 8 – 0 lead.         The Blue Devils showed character and resiliency as they ran off 38 unanswered points. Offensively, fullback Hunter Stanford led the team with 112 yards rushing. None were bigger than a 56-yard rush that kept the drive alive that followed the Calhoun City score.

Defensively, reserve Linebacker E.J. Bounds led the team with seven total tackles and three for losses.

Versus Coffeeville

The following Tuesday, September 22, the Junior Blue Devils hosted their cross-county rivals, the Coffeeville Pirates. The 7th grade team continued their winning streak, moving to (4-0) with a 30-8 victory.

This team usually features the ground game, but it was the passing attack that stole the show on this night. Quarterback Brandon Bounds connected with wideout Thomas Johnson on two 70-yard touchdown passes.

Running Back Deon Hilliard added the other offensive touchdown on a 46-yard rushing score. Elijah Rogers and Brandon Bounds both had two-point conversions on the night. Defensively, linebacker Sherrod Rucker added a 36-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, Cornerback Skyler Defer had an Interception, and Linebacker Dimetrius Ingram had a fumble recovery.

The 8th grade squad also moved to (4-0) with a 36-6 victory over the rival Pirates. A strong offensive line and solid wide receiver blocking led the way for a solid night by running back Cortaveus Hawkins. He finished with 154 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Not to be outdone by the 7th grade passing attack, Quarterback E.J. Bounds found Trey Alexander for a 47-yard Touchdown Pass. He also hit fullback Hunter Stanford for a 38-yard passing strike. Robert Mayes scored his first career touchdown on a 33-yard rush.

Defensively, the Blue Devils were led by linebacker James Washington with seven total tackles and two for a loss and Cornerback Trey Alexander with an interception.
