NWCC Rangers Sweep Two from Mississippi Delta

Northwest Community College freshman starting pitcher Tarus Hervey of Water Valley kept his record perfect at 3-0 by striking out six in 5.1 innings of work against the Mississippi Delta Trojans March 27.
Hervey limited the Trojans to three hits and two earned runs during a doubleheader sweep at Bellipani Field in Moorhead. The Rangers won by scores of 12-7 and 9-6 to improve to 17-10 overall and 5-3 in the MACJC North Division.
Sophomore Davis Horton provided the offensive spark the Rangers have been waiting for most of the spring, collecting seven hits and eight RBI.
Horton, who was Northwest’s designated hitter in the first game and first baseman in the second, entered the twin bill with Mississippi Delta batting .295 with five RBI. At the end of the day, he upped his batting average to .377 and moved his RBI total to 13.
Horton picked up six of his eight RBI in the opening contest on four hits, including a pair of doubles. Horton had a two-run single in the third inning, a three-run double in the fourth frame, and an RBI-double in the seventh.
Northwest racked up 16 hits in the game with sophomore outfielders Tyler Benson of Pope and Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley adding three each. Ferrell also picked up a two RBI.
Ranger freshman starting pitcher Charley Sullivan of Oxford improved his record to 3-2 by throwing 4.2 innings and allowing four earned runs. Sullivan struck out three and walked three.
Horton was credited with three of Northwest’s 12 hits in the second contest, including a two-run homer in the third inning.
The Rangers claimed a 5-1 lead after five innings and stretched their advantage to 9-1 by pushing four runs across in the sixth. Northwest freshman catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando collected an RBI-double in the sixth, while sophomore second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch added an RBI-single.
