The Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers closed the first half of their MACJC North Division schedule by sweeping the Coahoma Tigers April 7 at Ranger Field in Senatobia.
Northwest won by scores of 6-3 and 12-2 to improve to 22-15 overall. The Rangers are one game behind division-leading Itawamba in the north standings. Itawamba is 10-2 in the division, followed by Northwest at 9-3.
In the first game against Coahoma, the Rangers led 2-1 after three innings thanks to an RBI-groundout by second baseman Seth Milliorn of Olive Branch. Northwest put the game away by pushing four runs across in the fourth frame.
Ranger catcher Drew Klepzig of Hernando provided a spark with a two-run single, while outfielder Ronnie Ferrell of Water Valley added an RBI-double.
Northwest starting pitcher Mark Husband of Tunica upped his record to 5-1 by throwing the first five innings and striking out three.
Ferrell collected two more doubles in the second contest as the Rangers racked up 12 hits. Ferrell got the Ranger offense going in the second inning with a two-run double.
Northwest first baseman Joel Rich of Southaven added an RBI-double as part of a six-run fifth inning to help the Rangers run-rule the Tigers. Northwest shortstop Drew Griffin of Somerville, Tenn., hit his third home run in four games with a solo blast in the fifth frame to push his team-leading total to seven. Outfielder Chad Wardlaw of Olive Branch hit his first homer of the spring with a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Ranger pitcher Matt Shaw of Oxford earned the victory by striking out six and allowing just three hits. Shaw moved his record to 4-3.
Northwest will host Northeast Saturday, April 10 at Ranger Field in Senatobia. The MACJC North Division doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
