NWCC Softball Sweeps Mississippi Delta

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Lady Ranger softball team collected 25 hits en route to sweeping a doubleheader from the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans April 17 in Moorhead.

Northwest won by scores of 9-1 and 7-6 to improve to 28-14 overall. The Lady Rangers are in third place in the MACJC North Division with a 12-8 mark with four games left in the season.

Northwest freshman third baseman Lauren Kendall of Boyle had four of her team’s 15 hits in the first contest. Kendall collected a triple and also had three RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Angela Carden of Southaven chipped in with three hits.

The Lady Rangers jumped on Mississippi Delta early by claiming a 5-1 lead after the first three innings.

Northwest freshman pitcher Magen Fullwood of Shiloh, Tenn., earned the win by striking out three and allowing just four hits in five innings of work.

The Lady Rangers pounded out 10 hits in the second game. Casi Brooks of Pope led the way with three hits, while Carden and Mandy Bolden of Holly Springs picked up two each.

Northwest broke a 6-6 tie by scoring the winning run in the top half of the seventh frame when Carden singled home Hannah Matthews of Spanish Fort, Ala. Matthews was courtesy running for catcher Brooks who collected a two-out double.

Freshman Rachel McDonald of Hernando was the winning pitcher by tossing the last three innings and limiting Mississippi Delta to only three hits.

The Lady Rangers host Northeast Friday, April 23 in Senatobia. The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m.
