Staff Report
WATER VALLEY – The Water Valley Blue Devil Football Program is reporting the best Summer Workout Season to date during the three seasons the current staff has been at WVHS. Going into the final week of Summer Workouts, 17 players had perfect attendance and 42 players had 90 percent or greater participation.
Chris Conard, Justin McCammon, and Cortaveus Hawkins are working on their third consecutive summer with perfect attendance. In early June, the program held its Third Annual Blue Devil Youth Camp and had a record 41 young players attend.
The Blue Devils also competed in the Oxford 7-on-7 League as well as the First Annual Under Armour OZone Classic Tournament in Oxford. The goal of 7-on-7 competition is to get better at the passing game and defending the pass.
“We made progress this summer toward being a more complete team,” Head Coach Brad Embry reported on the summer competition. “We achieved what we set out to do before our first game in Oxford in early June.”
“This has been our best summer during the three years we have been here,” Defensive Coordinator Richard Russo added.
“We have to show up on July 26 with the attitude that we are going to take all of this strength, speed, and endurance training and put it to use on the game field,” Russo said, referring to fall camp which started Monday.
The team will host the “Meet the Blue Devils” and preseason scrimmage on August 13 at Clark Field versus the Vardaman Rams.
Regular season starts at Clark Field on August 20 versus the rival Bruce Trojans.
