Junior Blue Devils Are Back In Action

Staff Report

On Monday, September 27,  the Junior Varsity Blue Devils kicked off a very successful week of football by dismantling the homestanding New Albany Bulldogs 22 to 0. It was the Cole Camp and K.J. Lee show, as both players had successful nights on both offense and defense.

Camp, who had two interceptions from his cornerback position also completed the majority of his passes from the quarterback position. Lee, who had two rushing touchdowns on the evening, also led the team with seven total tackles, including three tackles for a loss. Tamarick Person also added a two-point conversion run. The JV team improved to (1-1) in 2010.

The following evening, the Junior High Blue Devils followed suit with two victories over the visiting Pope Bulldogs. The 7th grade team defeated the Bulldogs by a 33 to 14 margin. Running Back Markedrius Gooch and his offensive line of Brandon Smith, Kody Gilley, Jarius Gooch, Austin McCluskey, Devin Rogers, and John Thomas Stanford ran through the Pope defense for over 300 yards rushing.

Leading the charge defensively was safety Kirkland Horton and linebacker Deon Jones, each had six total tackles. With the victory, the 7th Grade Team improved to (3-1-1) on the season.

The 8th grade team had yet another hard fought victory over the Pope Bulldogs by a slim 6-0 margin. The lone score of the evening came from an Elijah Rogers’ rushing touchdown.

The Blue Devil defense kept the Bulldogs in check for the entire night with numerous three and outs. Defensively, the team was led by lineman DeMarrius Coleman and linebacker Derrick Gooch. Each had five total tackles, and three tackles for a loss. Coleman also added a quarterback sack. The 8th grade team improved to (4-1) on the season.

The following week, the junior Blue Devil teams were not as successful as a road trip to Senatobia saw three losses and an injury that stopped the action for a significant amount of time.

The 7th grade blue Devils were gridlocked with the Warriors 8 to 8 for the majority of the game. Late in the game, Defensive End Brandon Smith was injured and had to be taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary reasons.

Smith was fine and has since returned to school and practice. Motivated to play for their teammate, the Blue Devil defense held strong on a hard fought goal line stand to keep the Warriors out of the endzone.

However, the ensuing play, a questionable fumble call gave the Warriors excellent field position and Senatobia capitalized with a 16 to 8 victory. This loss put the 7th grade team’s record at (3-2-1). The 8th grade team was defeated 26-0 to fall to (4-2) and the JV was defeated 22-6 to fall to (1-2).

All three teams were back in action this past Tuesday night versus the South Pontotoc Cougars and the Bruce Trojans.
