Lady Rangers Bounce Back with 78-77 Win over East Mississippi

SENATOBIA — After falling to rival Northeast last week in Booneville in its division-opener, Northwest bounced back nicely tonight with a hard-fought 78-77 home win over visiting East Mississippi thanks to a solid performance from the Lady Ranger bench.
 
Northwest improved to 4-6 overall and evened its record to 1-1 in the MACJC, while East Mississippi dropped to 6-4 and 1-1 in the division.
 
In a game that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes, Northwest overcame a 20-point, 11-assist night from Chadisty Hickman for the 1-point win.
 
Sandricka Bowen’s first free throw off a 1-and-1 with 2.5 seconds left gave Northwest the go-ahead point, as she finished the night with a team-high 13 points along with Lanita Futrell who also had 13 points, five assists and four steals.
 
Northwest led 38-35 at the break thanks to another solid night on the boards, finishing the game by out-rebounding a seventh opponent with a 50-36 advantage.
 
EMCC, however, started the second half on a 16-5 run to take its largest lead of the game at 51-43 with 12:46 to play, using 11 of Shanteria Tate’s 19 points during the spurt.
 
The Lady Rangers clawed back within three on several different occasions but didn’t retake the lead until Erica Turner’s layup and free throw with 1:47 to play made it 74-73. Brittany Patton then added a layup to stretch the lead to 76-73. 
 
EMCC knotted it at 76-76 the ensuing possession, using Tate’s lone 3-pointer of the contest off a Raven Howard assist.
 
After missing the back end of a 1-and-1 that would’ve given EMCC a one-point lead, Bowen drew a foul on the other end that eventually led to the victory.
 
Northwest used a 50-36 rebounding edge and 18-2 advantage on second chance points to even its record in the division. Sherneal Thompson and Christina Moss scored seven points apiece off the bench in addition to eight from Brandy Walls, as the Lady Ranger bench outscored EMCC 30-16.
 
The Lady Rangers will return to action Jan. 11 at East Central.

 
EMCC Lions Roar to 82-66 Road Win at Northwest

SENATOBIA — Deonte Alexander pumped in 18 of his game-high 26 points in the first half and Joe McCoy added 16 as visiting and 23rd-ranked East Mississippi led from start to finish in an 82-66 road win over Northwest.
 
East Mississippi improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the MACJC North, while Northwest lost its first home game of the year in falling to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the north division.
 
The Lions led by as many as 17 in the first half and opened the game with a 13-2 spurt, allowing the Rangers to get within single digits just once as they took a 44-34 lead at intermission.
 
Northwest tried to find some momentum in the opening minutes of the second half, quickly cutting the lead down to seven off an Akeem Anderson and-one after the layup and foul.
 
After EMCC stretched the lead back out to double digits, the Rangers put together a 7-1 run to close within 59-53 with 8:18 left.
 
But that’s as close as Northwest would get the rest of the way, as a 10-2 run for EMCC to close the game made the final score 82-66 in favor of the visitors.
 
EMCC dominated Northwest on the glass with a 50-27 advantage, including 18 offensive boards, and outscored the Rangers in transition 21-0.
 
Reggie Fondren was the only Ranger in double figures despite an off-shooting night, scoring 20 points thanks to connecting on 12-of-13 shots from the charity stripe. A.J Cunningham added nine points in 16 minutes of action.
 
Northwest will return to the hardwood Jan. 8 at Columbia State (Tenn.)
