Water Valley’s junior high Blue Devils were back in action on Thursday, December 9, when the Pope Bulldogs came to town.
In the first game of the evening, the Lady Devils’ seventh and eighth grade teams combined to play the seventh and eighth grade Lady Bulldogs. The first half was a close game with Water Valley leading 8-7 at the break. The Lady Devils pulled away in the second half by outscoring Pope 10-2 and winning by a final score of 18-9. Eighth grader Shy Folson led Water Valley in scoring with five points. Eighth grader Annie Person and seventh grader Ally Avant had four points each in the win.
The seventh grade boys’ game was the most exciting game of the night, even though the Blue Devils came up a little short in a double overtime thriller.
With an 18-15 lead late in the game, Water Valley seemed to be in control and about to pick up their second win against Pope. However, the Bulldogs hit a three-point basket at the buzzer to tie the game and send it into overtime. Water Valley took a two point lead in overtime and it looked as if they would hold on for the win. Pope, however, scored with six seconds on the clock to force a second overtime.
The second overtime was “sudden death”, meaning that the first team to score would win. Both teams had their chances, but in the end it was Pope that hit the game winning shot and won by a final score of 22-20. On a positive note, the seventh grade had six players that scored in the game with Mark Gooch leading the way with six points.
In the final game of the night, Water Valley’s eighth grade boys took an early 2-0 lead and led by a score of 7-4 at halftime. In the second half the Blue Devils pulled away and won by a final score of 22-11. Skylar Defer had eight points in the win and Dee McNeal added seven.
This was the last action for the junior high until after the Christmas holiday. They will return to the court when they travel to Charleston on January 6. The next home game is scheduled for Monday, January 10. All games begin at 5:00.
