OCEAN SPRINGS – On Saturday, December 18, Senior Outside Linebacker J.D. Fondon, Head Coach Brad Embry, and Defensive Coordinator Richard Russo all aided the North Squad to a 19-14 victory in the 62nd Annual Bernard Blackwell All-Star Classic held in Ocean Springs.
Fondon, played various linebacker positions and appeared on many special teams. His final stat line was six total tackles, a fumble recovery, and the game ending tackle. The fumble recovery came at a crucial point in the game as the South Squad was in the North Squad’s redzone threatening to take a second half lead.
Fondon, as he did so many times for the Blue Devils over the past four seasons, stepped up and made something happen.
“This was a great experience for me,” Fondon reported after the game. “Especially to end my senior year and to help me continue one of my dreams, of playing college football. There is nothing like playing in an all-star game meeting new players and becoming friends with them. There were some outstanding ball players out there and I am glad I had the chance to play with and against them. Thank you to all who made this possible from my parents, to the coaches, to the school, and those who supported by buying ads.””
Coach Embry served as the Offensive Coordinator for the North Squad which rolled up over 300 yards and 19 points during the course of the game. These stats are impressive as the squad had only three days of practice to learn the Blue Devils’ offense and terminology. Nearby North Panola Player Ricky Hunt was a weapon that Coach Embry used early and often and earned the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. Coach Embry also brought Coach Russo to aid the North as the booth coach for their eyes in the sky. The victory pulls the North Squad closer to evening up the all time series as the North now trails (26-28-4).
The Blue Devils will have one more senior participating in Football as Eric Buckley has been invited to participate in the Missis-sippi versus Louisiana “Who’s the Man” All-Star Game in Baton Rogue, Louisiana early this Spring Semester.
