Join WVMSA And Become More Involved

By Mickey Howley

The Water Valley Main Street Association is a community volunteer, public and private supported group with a mission to improve our downtown. There are well over a hundred members of the WVMSA.

Over the course of a year the cumulative number of hours the members work amounts to many thousands of hours of effort on various projects. How we decide those projects, what ones to focus time, energy, and money on are decided by the standing committees and membership along with association’s board.

Currently the board has Bobbie Turnage as the President, P.J. Blount as the Vice-President, Joe Black as the Treasurer, and Becky Tatum as the Secretary. The rest of the board members are Rubye Carr, Amos Harvey, Alexe van Beuren, Janet Dickey, and Eddie Ray.

The chairpersons of the five standing committees are Joe Black for Organization, Bill Taylor for Economic Re-Structuring, Jessie Gurner for Design, Alexe van Beuren for Promotions, and Bill Warren and Ramona Benard co-chairs the Arts Council. Then there are committees that focus only on specific project, like the Movie On Main committee; last year lead by Coulter Fussell who along with P. J. Blount handled all the various details of producing those events. These are just a few of the many members who throughout the year work on Main Street projects.

The WVMSA is reviewing our plans for our “Program of Work” for 2011. We break it down by committees and this week I will mention what the Organization and Promotion Committees have lined up and note that the next general meeting to discuss this coming year’s plan will be Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Street office. All Main Street members and community members are encouraged to attend, comment on, and commit to any of these projects.

The Organization Committee is charged with promoting the program itself to downtown interests and the public. They are in charge of managing the membership drive; we already have a solid core of members, but do not have everyone with an interest in the downtown district and the town’s health on board. Organization supervises the annual general meeting and board election. It designs the sponsorship program that promotes Main Street supporters and it handles the fund raising from our members and from community interests and events.

The Promotion Committee handles a variety of events all designed to bring people downtown. They are the ones who organize the Main Street Market Festival that highlights local arts and crafts and farm fresh produce. They also run the Farmers Market in season and set up the end of season Farmers Market Fiesta and Antique Tractor Show. Promotions also produces the two downtown pep rallies for the Blue Devil Football team. They handle advertising campaigns like the one now in Oxford Invitation and the ones that run often in this paper. They produce the annual Water Valley shopping guide and oversee the website and social media sites.

Next week this article will have what the other three committees are planning. Make a new years resolution to be more involved in your downtown, contact any of the folks named above, or the Main Street office, or come to the next meeting.
