HB 1205 Bans Fake Bath Salts, Representatives Support Rail Line
By Tommy Reynolds
The House of Represen-tatives has passed House Bill 1205, which bans fake bath salts that people use to get high. Until now, these items could be purchased on the open market.
A person who was high on this substance was charged with murder of a law enforcement official in northeast Mississippi, and drug enforcement officials requested that this substance be banned. I supported the bill and it will now be sent to the Senate for their consideration.
The House of Represen-tatives passed House Bill 866, designating a portion of Mississippi State Highway 382 as the “Gulf Ordinance Plant Memorial Highway,” in honor of the ammunition plant that operated in our state during World War II. The plant hired up to 10,000 people, including many women who made a great contribution to the U. S. war effort. I think it is very important that we remember the sacrifices of those in years past who assured that we are able to enjoy the freedoms that we cherish today.
I have recently introduced as a primary author, with the support of all representatives up and down the line from Desoto County, all the way to Canton, a bill which would provide matching funding to upgrade the rail line known as the old “Illinois Central Rail Line.”
The line runs from Southaven to Canton and goes through Panola, Yalobusha, Tallahatchie, Grenada, Montgomery, Tate and Desoto counties.
This bill would provide funds that could be used for matching funds to upgrade the rail line from a Class I track, which only allows trains to go 10 miles per hour, to a Class II track, which would provide for speedier rail movement.
I think that it is absolutely vital that we make all efforts to preserve this line, which is critical to attracting and keeping industries in the counties that border on or are near this rail line.
