OXFORD – The Lady Blue Devils opened their season Saturday at the Oxford Classic with a split game outing. They gave up the first game against South Pontotoc, 9-0, and won the second game against the Cleveland Wildcats, 3-1.

Kelsey Kimzey pitched the second game against the Wildcats, recording five strikeouts and giving up one walk.

“I’m very proud of my team today, I had no worries out there because I knew they had my back,” Kimzey said after the game.

Freshman Briana “Bree” Thompson was equally excited after the win, reporting, “We hit the ball pretty good, but we still can improve on communications.” Bree played shortstop, and is also a utility player.

Ashley Phillips also had an impressive performance, slapping a triple to lead-off in the first inning.

In the final inning, a solo home run by Haley Vance, a junior, gave Water Valley the 3-1 lead and Cleveland could not answer before time expired.

At presstime Tuesday, the Lady Devils were competing in a double-header against the Nettleton Tigers at home.
