WATER VALLEY – The Water Valley Blue Devils opened their regular season last Tuesday, sweeping the Charleston Tigers 15-0 and 16-1 in a double header at home.
Taylor King took the mound to start the first game, striking out the first three batters. Cole Camp led things off offensively with a walk, followed by a double by Drew Pratt. A fly out RBI by Walt McCollough put Water Valley on the board as Camp scored easily from third base. J.D. Fondon’s first bat of the year produced a towering home run that added two more runs.King was hit by a wild pitch and Chris Wilson came in to run for him.
The action continued in the first inning after Adam Langham connected with an RBI double that scored Wilson. A fly out by John Grimmett and a walk by Tyler Kimzey loaded the bases for Austin Hodge. Hodge hit into a ground out, stranding the runners.
Once again the next inning saw King perfect on the mound with three strikeouts. King led every batter with a first pitch fast ball for a strike.
In the bottom of the second inning Water Valley scored a pair of runs off a Fondon double.
King struggled a little in the top of third inning after hitting the first two batters. He struck out the next batter, but walked the fourth person in the inning, loading the bases with only one out. After a quick trip to the mound by Coach Kary Bridges, King settled down, striking out the next two batters and stranding three.
Water Valley had a total of 11 hitters come to the plate, scoring nine more runs in the last inning and the game was called, 15-0. The Blue Devils second game was equally impressive with a 16-1 game.
The Blue Devils were scheduled to be back in action Tuesday, but heavy rain cancelled the game.
