Lady Devil softball was back at it this past week with a junior varsity and varsity match-up against the Lafayette Commodores.

The JV put up some hits, but lost by a sole run.

Action continued with the varsity game, which saw all nine of the regular starters taking the field to take a 12-4 loss.

“I’m not worried so much about you throwing strikes as I am you throwing something they will swing at,” were last minute instructions from coach Kendra Bensch to pitcher Kelzey Kimzey.

Kimzey gave them something to swing at in the first two innings, with her fielders put down five with three ground outs and two fly outs. A strike-out accounted for the final out.

The third inning saw nine hitters for Lafayette come to the plate, scoring three runs.

Blue Devil players Ashley Phillips and Callie Phillips scored in the next inning to close the gap.

Lafayette answered, scoring two more in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth inning.

Water Valley had a pitching change as Haley Vance took the mound and once again the defense stopped the Commodores.

A late rally by Shade Epes and Mallory Washington accounted for the last two runs, giving the Blue Devils four on the scoreboard.

The Lady Devils will be back in action against Bruce on the 22nd.
