The Water Valley Junior High Blue Devils football team competed in a jamboree last Thursday.
In the first game, the Blue Devils defeated the Pope Bulldogs 25-12. The Water Valley team opened up scoring as Mark Gooch rushed for a 15-yard touchdown. On the ensuing drive, Gooch would find wideout Devin Fleming for a 30-yard touchdown on the halfback pass play. Marshall Allred added the extra point.
Quarterback Kirkland Horton and running back Taurek Willis also added rushing touchdowns during the contest. Willis contributed on defense by picking off the Bulldog quarterback. Lineback Deon Jones led all tacklers in this game with six tackles.
In game two against Charleston, Gooch and Horton combined for all 18 of the offensive points against the Tigers on rushing plays led by the offensive line of Brandon Smith, Kody Gilley, Jarius Gooch, Austin McCluskey, Sean Gehringer and J.T. Stanford. Horton also connected with receivers Fleming, Isiah Moore, Anthony Smith and Kegan Faustin during this contest. Linebackers Faustin and Fleming added quarterback sacks. Horton led all tacklers in this contest with five stops.
“We are proud of the way the young men came out and competed,” reported Junior High Coach Richard Russo. “Both Pope and Charleston are well coached teams and play very hard. Now that we have had a successful spring training, the players’ focus will turn to final exams and the weightroom for the 2011 summer workouts,” Russo added.
