Blue Devils Participate In Scout Combine

TUPELO – For the fourth consecutive year, held an annual combine for the best football talent across the state of Mississippi at Tupelo High School on Saturday, May 28. Four Blue Devils represented Water Valley High School.

    The players were senior cornerback Chris Conard, senior outside linebacker C.J.

Jackson, senior strong safety Kenon Kirkwood, and Defensive Coordinator Coach Richard Russo.

    The players were tested in the 40-yard dash, the 5-10-5 shuttle, the L-Cone Drill, and the Standing Broad Jump. After testing, the players were given individual instruction from coaches across the state, then competed against some of the best talent in the state in one on one drills, and finally were honed their pass game skills and defending the pass in 7-on-7 drills.

    The results are recorded on the nation’s leading recruiting website for college coaches and fans to view. will also post highlight videos of the players from their regular season and playoff games.

    Cornerback Chris Conard was one of only four defensive backs named to this prestigious team out of the fifty-plus in attendance.

    Blue Devil Defensive Coordinator Coach Richard Russo was invited to coach at the annual event.

    “I was impressed with the overall talent in Mississippi this year. Not only was it the largest combine yet with 156 athletes in attendance, it was the best crop thus far,” Russo said about the combine.

    “ I was pleased with the performance of our three players, they definitely belonged with the best of the best in the state. These three will have to be leaders for us this fall for us to accomplish our lofty goals.”     

    The Blue Devils began their strenuous 2011 summer workouts Monday morning at 7 a.m.
