Family, Friends Add Up To Real Carnival Fun

Thirty years ago on Aug. 2, 1981 the Watermelon Carnival was back for a second year. A large crowd gathered for the noon opening at the “old” gazebo in City Park, wrote Earl Fly in his Water Valley Area Wanderings column.

The National Anthem was sung by Petty Officer Carolyn Leech accompanied by the Navy Band under direction of Water Valley native Jerry Clements. Watermelon Queen Caroline Anderson was presented along with her court.

Fly wrote, “One of the greatest pleasures of the Carnival was seeing so many of our old friends. There seemed to be a real spirit of homecoming as friends came together for a day of visiting and fun.”

His comments are just as true today as they were three decades ago. The real fun of Carnival is visiting with family and friends.
