Art Talk
When I recently came upon a sign advertising the 7th Annual One Night Stand Motel Art Show at the Ole Miss Hotel, I was ecstatic. It is one of my favorite arts events of the year, and I always look forward to attending. This year, it will be held on Oct. 20th from 7-10pm and will feature art work from 13 artists. Of those participants, only 3 are returning from past shows, so you can expect to see work from artists hailing from Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and Paris, France.
This is how it works: Each artist has a room in the hotel and sets up their work in the room often decorating it to suit the theme of their work. The event is free, but bring along some extra cash so you can purchase some art for your walls. There is always a great selection, and the atmosphere of the kitschy Ole Miss Hotel is what sets this show apart.
The visionary behind this fun show is local resident, Erin Abbott Kirkpatrick, who also owns a shop in Oxford, Amelia Presents. She has presented motel shows in Oxford, Los Angeles, and has plans to bring similar shows to Portland, Oregon, and Nashville Tennessee. This year’s show is sponsored by the Motel Art Show Series, Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and Amelia Presents.
As parking is limited, I recommend that you park in the free lot behind the Powerhouse and walk over to the hotel. You will delight in the art, revel in the atmosphere and enjoy the camaraderie of the community. Send me any arts related news at arttogollc@gmail.com
