Junior High Takes Two From Trojans

Staff Report
BRUCE – The Water Valley 7th grade Blue Devils got back into the win column by defeating the homestanding Bruce Trojans on Monday, October 8.
The youngest Devils won in convincing fashion 36 to 0 and improved to (4-2) on the campaign. Outside linebacker Emanuel Judson opened up the scoring by recovering a Trojan fumble and taking it 34 yards to the endzone. The Blue Devil defensive trio of Tyler Curvin, Joseph Washington, and Sam Van Winkle kept the Trojan running attack in check for the evening.
Corner D’Onterrious Her-vey led the outside defensive attack with six total tackles. Offensively, this team had its best output of the year. Runningback Tyrese McGuirt had the best night of his young career with 158 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Fullback Sam Van Winkle also contributed with 51 rushing yards on the evening. The offensive line of Gavin Darby, Jeremy Jenkins, Curvin, Nate Griffin, Judson, and Nakia Day paved the way for that strong rushing performance. Quarterback Ty Varner also connected through the air with receivers Jayvon Morgan and Darby for large gains.
The 8th Grade Blue Devils found their biggest test to date as they narrowly escaped Trojan Field with a 6 to 0 victory to keep their undefeated and unscored upon streak alive. The Trojan defense limited the Blue Devil offensive attack despite good field position for the young offense.
Runningback Devonte “Quez” Towns led all Devils with 54 yards rushing and the lone rushing score. Defensive lineman Rob Mitchell caused havoc in the Trojan backfield all night as he had four tackles for loss. His counterparts Samuel Dunn added a key fumble recovery and Dustin Buice had a crucial open field tackle that halted a Trojan drive as they neared midfield.
Outside linebacker Taghee James secured the victory with an acrobatic interception that enabled the offense to line up in victory formation. This year’s version of the 8th Grade Devils will try to match their 2009 and 2011 counterparts by going undefeated heading into their final game at home against the Pope Bulldogs.
