VFW Seeks Help With Care Packages For Deployed Soldiers
VFW Post 4100, located at 11535 Highway 315, west of Water Valley, sponsors a Family Support Group for the families of the 289th Vertical Construction Company. These troops are now serving in Afghanistan and they are mostly from the Water Valley and Bruce areas.
“We are building care packages to send overseas to the troops. If you would like to donate non-perishables, contact Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4100, Water Valley,” stated Commander Sam Phillips. Forestry Meeting Set For Nov. 1
A forestry meeting will be held on Thursday, November 1, at 6 p.m. at the Yalobusha County Multi-Purpose Building. Dr. Jason Gordon and Rick Hamrick will be the presenters. Topics for the meeting will be tree farm certification and small game. A meal will be served, please contact the Extension Office to reserve your seat at 662-675-2730.
SHIP Coordinator To Be At FBC To Assist In Medicare’s Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment for Medicare started October 15, and runs through December 7. The time period allows recipients time to review and make changes to their coverage. This time also ensures Medicare has enough time to process your choice so your coverage can begin without interruption on January 1, 2013.
The State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) coordinator and volunteers will be in Water Valley on Thursday, November 1, at First Baptist Church. The SHIP program is administered through North Central Planning & Development District, Area Agency on Aging. To make an appointment call the church office at (662) 473-2230.
Mount Olivet Church Hosts Car Show And Auction
Mount Olivet Church (located between Water Valley and Batesville on Highway 315) is sponsoring a car show and auction on November 3 in the Family Life Building. This event will help raise money to do work on the building. Judging of the cars will be at noon.
Barbecue plates will be available. The auction will begin at 6 p.m. There will be lots of good collectibles, old stuff from attics, as well as new miscellaneous items, and plenty of good food.
“All my commission will be given to the building fund. I now work with churches and Christian non-profits and give 100% of my time to help raise money for the organizations,” reports auctioneer Cecil Ingram. For more information visit www.circleiauction.com.
Invitation Extended To Join The Sweet Potato Cooking Contest
A sweet potato cooking contest will be held Saturday afternoon, November 10, during the 39th Annual Sweet Potato Festival in Vardaman. Winners will be selected in each of these categories: Cakes, Pies; Miscellaneous (Desserts); Miscellaneous (Others); Low Calorie; Men’s; Youth (12-18); and Children (under 12).
The Mayor’s Cup will be presented at the Banquet Saturday night to the over-all winner.
The contest is open to the public. The recipe must be original and unpublished. The prepared dish and the recipe (without personal information) should be brought to the Vardaman School cafeteria between 12-1 p.m. November 10. Refrigeration is not available. Have product assembled and ready to put on judging table.
Use your imagination to create a brand new recipe, or adapt an old recipe by adding a personal touch.

Third Annual Community Sing-along Set For Nov. 3
The third annual Community Sing-along will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Hendricks Machine Shop building on South Main Street. Admission is free and there is music and fun for everyone, according to the Water Valley Arts Council, sponsors of the event. Snacks will be available.
Last year’s sing-along won Best Special Event in the state from the Mississippi Main Street Association.
Prime Country Performs At VFW
The regular VFW Post 4100’s Saturday Night Dance will be held this week on November 3 in the Post Home, located at 11535 Highway 315, west of Water Valley. Entertainment will be provided by Prime Country from 8 p.m. until midnight. “Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy listening, or dancing, to the music,” says Commander Sam Phillips. For those interested in playing the electronic VLC machines, the doors will open at 2 p.m.
VFW Sponsors Bingo On Nov. 2, 5
VFW bingo will be played on Monday and Friday nights, November 2 and 5. Come out and join VFW Post 4100 for a fun filled evening of bingo at their Post Home, located at 11535 Highway 315, west of Water Valley. The building opens at 2 p.m. on Monday, Friday, and Saturday for playing the electronic VLC Bingo Games. Regular bingo session sales start at 6 p.m. and the first of 24 games begins at 7. You must be at least 18 years of age to play.
Calhoun Forestry Meeting Provides Update On Timber Market
A Calhoun County Forestry meeting will be held Monday, November 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Dr. James Henderson, MSU Forestry, has agreed to give a program on “Timber Market Update”. A meal will be served at this meeting.
“Please call the Calhoun County Extension Office at (662) 412-3177 by Thursday, November 8, to let us know if you plan to attend. This will allow us to get an accurate count for the meal,” stated Trent Barnett, Interim County Director.
Pink Ladies Hold Annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale On Nov. 17

Friends Of Blackmur Memorial Library Schedule Meeting
The Friends of Blackmur Memorial Library will have an organization meeting Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 at the library.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the Friends of the Library program is encouraged to attend. The group, which has been inactive for several years, is a separate, non-profit organization that offers support to the library through fundraising, supporting and planning programming and promoting the library in the community. Volunteers also assist the staff with programs such as the Summer Library Program and National Library Week.

Monthly Lion’s Pancake Breakfast Is Saturday
The monthly Lion’s Pancake Breakfast will be held in the Depot Building Saturday, November 3, between the hours of 6:30 and 9 a.m. The menu will be all you care to eat of pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. The cost will be $5 per plate.
A new shipment of Lion’s cheese has just arrived and you may purchase this at the breakfast.
“Everyone is invited to come out, enjoy a delicious meal, some great fellowship, and purchase cheese, which will help with the many charitable programs of the Lions Club,” stated Lion Ernie Aune.

Maximum Championship Wrestling Superstars will have a wrestling fundraiser for the 289th VCC-NCO in the Bruce National Guard Armory Saturday, November 3. The Armory is located on Highway 9 in Bruce. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with bell time being 7. General admission will be $8.
