Art Talk
In this busy season of summer vacations and activities, it is good to know that there are lots of options that involve art. With Oxford and Memphis in driving distance from the Valley, it is easy to see great art in a well curated museum.
At the University Museum on the campus of Ole Miss, you can see everything from fine art to scientific instruments used many years ago. They have a great collection of Greek Antiquities, photography exhibits and a hall of great modern paintings and works.
With the convenience of great parking and the Bailey’s Woods trail behind Rowan Oak right behind the museum, this is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and more information is available at http://museum.olemiss.edu/.
The National Ornamen-tal Metal Museum in Memphis is not the usual museum with paintings hanging on the walls. What you will see is a great collection of all things metal. They have gates, lampposts, jewelry and more.
There is an outdoor sculpture museum as well as a smithy and foundry where you can see metal being forged into magnificent creations.
It’s location on the Mississippi River edge offers some incredible views of this magnificent river. It is located at 374 Metal Museum Drive and is open Tuesdays to Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays are open from noon to five.
You can visit their website at http://www.metalmuseum.org/ before you go.
