Art Talk
As we move into midsummer, vacations past and present are on our minds. Summer is the time to travel and go places near and far. With this thought in mind, the Power-house Gallery Series is showcasing artist’s renditions of their favorite travel destinations.
The Vacation Show features works by Mississippi artists celebrating the places they like to vacation. The exhibit went up on July 1st and will come down on August 2nd. There are paintings, photographs, and metal sculptures in this show all representing vacation spots or the idea of vacation.
Artist Carra Hewitt suggested this idea last year at a meeting held to discuss possible shows for the gallery series. The gallery series is open to all artists and the themes for the shows are generated by the public as well as making this a community-based gallery that welcomes local artist participation.
Ten artists are showing work in the exhibit, and they hail from Jackson, Memphis, Germantown, Oxford and surrounding counties. The reception is where the fun will continue as there will be an interactive component. The location titles will be hidden, and there will be a guessing game to see how many correct locales can be identified by viewers. Prizes will be awarded, and refreshments served at this event which will be held on Tuesday, July 23rd in conjunction with the monthly Art Crawl from 6 to 8 p.m. This is sure to be a fun night to experience art!
