Art Talk

By Andi Bedsworth

Football season is definitely upon us here in north Mississippi, and many artists are getting creative so they can benefit from our increased population and extra visitors. Oxford Artists’ Guild has decided to make changes to their Annual Fall Art Show and Sale to increase their exposure and possible earnings this week.
The Oxford Artists’ Guild has traditionally held their art shows on Saturdays and usually avoids football weekends after discovering that many football fans are not willing to purchase art as they are making their way to the grove for the game.
With this information in hand, they have chosen to hold their show on a Friday before a big game. We all know that football fans start pouring into town early, and Fridays are busy in Oxford on game weekends. The guild is hoping that some of these visitors to the square will be interested in buying art. They will be set up on the Courthouse Lawn from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, October 11.
The guild includes over 90 members from Oxford and surrounding communities. There are painters, mixed media artists, potters, jewelry makers, a blacksmith, toymaker and some sculptors and woodworkers as well. The guild serves as a network for artists to support and learn from each other.
This group puts on fourshows a year with two being outside show/sales. Come out and support this organization as they show off their creations this fall, and please send me your arts related news to
