Art Talk

By Andi Bedsworth

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are all aware that the Christmas season is upon us even before the turkey is carved.
Decorations are appearing around town and people are buying presents and planning celebrations. Many organizations are using this festive time to raise money for their causes by putting on parties and holding auctions.  Several area galleries are continuing their annual tradition of celebrating the season in this style.
The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council is holding their Annual Holiday Ornament Auction on Dec. 12th. The council is the official arts agency for the City of Oxford and Lafayette County.
They raise their funds to support over 20 different arts groups including educational programming for students and free arts programs for the community. You can become a member of the arts council which allows you to come to the party that will be catered by local restaurants. They also need artists to donate original ornaments to the sale. This donation entitles you to one free membership of the arts council and 2 free tickets to the party which is always a big celebration with lots of food, art and merriment.
On top of there being lots of handcrafted ornaments for sale, there will also be a raffle to win a painting by Jere Allen. Tickets are $25 each, and there will only be 100 tickets sold.
If you are interested in donating an ornament or becoming a member, please call 236-6429 or email
Don’t forget that there are several art shows opening in the Valley on Dec. 6th that I will cover in more detail next week.  Please send me your arts related news to
