It is Double Decker time again, and this is the second year that the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and the Oxford Artists’ Guild have teamed up to kick off the festival with an artistic bang on the Friday before the big fest. This year they will be setting up a market and artist demonstration area on North Lamar right next to the First National Bank. There will be art on display and for sale by almost 20 local artists and several will demonstrate their techniques throughout the day.
If you are wondering why you might want to come out on Friday when the big festival will be Saturday, I will give you some answers to this question. First, the square will be less crowded on Friday. Second, this market is staged by all local artists who have been contributing to our creative economy for many years. Third, there will be demonstrations and studio tours by some of these artisans allowing you to see how they create their work. You also get to revel in the arts for two days instead of just one.
Another bonus of attending the market on Friday is that you can get a map for the Studio Tours which includes open studios of several local artists living in and around town. This map can be obtained at the demo area for a small donation. Visiting their work spaces gives you an inside look into their process and adds a different aspect to the Double Decker experience. So hit the square from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 25 to kick off your art-filled weekend!
