Living Well In Yalobusha County

Eleven Ladies Learn Defense Techniques In Self Defense Class

By Pamela Redwine

The women’s self defense class was a huge success. A special thanks to Jeff Kellum and Jesse Richards from University Police Department for instructing us in the R.A.D. (Rape, Aggression and Defense System).
Also to Tony Carmichael for helping me get this program together and teaching the class about gun safety and instructing the class on the shooting range. I can honestly say I have not been that tired in a long time – punching, kicking, screaming and shooting. Let me just say, there are 11 ladies in Yalobusha county that you don’t want to mess with!
Our 4-H will meet Thursday, September 25.
The Yalobusha Buddies (ages 9-18) and Cloverbuds (ages 5-8) 4-H Clubs will meet on Thursday, September 25, at 4 p.m. at the Yalobusha County Extension Office located in the Multi-Purpose Building in Coffeeville. The meeting is free and is open to all youth. Parents are welcome to stay. This week our program will focus on ATV safety. Please contact the Extension Service at 675-2730 if you plant to attend.
We had so much fun at our last DIY Chalk Paint Class that we are going to do it again. Our next class will be on Friday, September 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $10 and will cover your painting supplies. You will need to bring a small item to paint – candlestick, picture frame, bowl, candy dish, letter for your door, etc. You can contact the Extension Office to register, 675-2730.  How-ever, money should be paid to complete your registration and reserve your spot.  Space is limited.
The Sewing for Service group will meet on Monday, September 29  from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Currently the group is working on wheelchair bags for residents at the Yalobusha General Nursing Home.  This group is open and is free to the public. We have material and machines, we just need you!
The crochet group will meet on Thursday, October 2 at 10 a.m. This group is free and is open to the public. If you would like to learn to crochet or if you would just like a group to meet with to work on your crocheting then this is the group for you. We hope you will join us.
The Healthy You Exercise Group meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Extension Office. Join us for up to 45 minutes of low impact physical activity. If you come, make sure you wear comfortable, cool clothes, good walking shoes and bring some water to drink.
It is hard to believe it, but it is time to order your MSU cheese if you want it in time for the holiday season. You can contact the Yalobusha County Extension Service at 675-2730 or visit www.msu cheese.com for an order form (which has the list of different cheeses and price).  If you do not order through our office please make sure to mark on your order form that Yalobusha Extension Service will pick up, then let us know that we will need to pick up your cheese. The deadline to order is Friday, October 24.
Plans are being made for the Yalobusha County Extension Service’s Holiday House, which will be Saturday, October 25th.  We will have vendors specializing in holiday (halloween, thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s) decorations and gifts.  We will also have some wonderful demonstrations and informative programs going on during the day.  Entry to the event is free – however we do ask that you bring a canned food item to go towards our Food for Families Food Drive that we do each year with WTVA.

C’ville Chamber, Extension Service Host Open House

The Coffeeville Chamber of Commerce and Yalobusha Extension Service are coordinating efforts to host Celebrate The Holidays on Saturday, October 25.
The event will be held in the Yalobusha Multipurpose Building, and will include all day shopping at booths filled with holiday items, baked and canned goodies, and many other arts and crafts. Demonstrations of arts and crafts for the holidays will take place in the meeting room of the building throughout the day. There will be a children’s play area, which will feature jumps and slides.
The Chamber will be raffling a gun for attendees to purchase chances on, which will be given away at 6 p.m. that day.
The event will have food booths for all to enjoy the refreshments that locals will cook up! The day would be an opportunity for former classmates to schedule class reunions and also come by the Holiday House. There will be event t-shirts for sale at $15 each.
The day will conclude with a Celebration Day Concert and Dance, featuring, The Bouffants, from 6-9 p.m.
Sponsorships are available. If you would like to help sponsor the event, you may contact the Coffeeville Chamber at (662) 675-8581. Get ready for a fun day in Coffeeville—Where Old Friends Gather!
