Art Talk

By Andi Bedsworth

We are now full swing into the holiday season. With Thanksgiving behind us, everyone is in the Christmas spirit. This Saturday, I urge you to visit Main Street for the evening festivities happening at the galleries.
Three annual events are occurring on Main that night as gallery owners get ready for the season. Bozarts Gallery and Alliance will present the 7th Annual Holiday Miniatures Show with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. This popular event features little art for sale just in time for gift-giving. Art has been 12 x 12 inches or smaller in the past, but this year the size has been lowered, and artists will have to meet the challenge of creating art that is 8 x 8 inches or smaller.
On display will be pottery, wood work, jewelry, cards, scarves and bags, magnets, prints and other little treasures. There will also be bigger pieces of art displayed in the mirror gallery portion of the gallery.
The First Annual Miniature Show was held in 2008, before the artist alliance formed, and was an exhibit featuring a diverse range of artists. Almost a year later, the alliance formed with a small group of local artists who work as a cooperative developing interesting shows and taking shifts to keep regular gallery hours.
Still going strong in 2014 this alliance continues to challenge itself to offer new and exciting shows that bring in crowds from all over North Mississippi.
Down the street at Yalo Studio, they will be putting on the Third Annual Multiples/Sweepstakes Show by Mike Howard. This fun concept involves the artist creating multiples of the same painting and assigning each their own number. The paintings are displayed and each one sold becomes a raffle ticket that is then drawn for prizes on Saturday night.
The prizes range from gift certificates to Larson’s Piggly Wiggly to a trip to Milwaukee. You might wonder why they chose that particular city, but it happens to be the birthplace of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer which is the subject of this year’s multiples. The first featured peaches and last year’s subjects were moon pies and RC colas. This year they present 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall: Win a Trip to Milwaukee Sweepstakes.          You can buy a number that represents a birthday or anniversary. Regardless of whether your number is drawn, you get to keep your painting. The gallery opens at 6 p.m. when the drawings begin! You can buy your painting in advance by calling 662-801-6253 or email at yalo.studio@yahoo.com, and I suggest you do as the paintings always sell quickly.
Don’t forget to stop by J. Clayton’s on Main right across from Bozarts as they will also be open that night. This shop features art by local artists including photography by Jim Hendrix and jewelry by Natalie Rodgers. They also have a full service framing shop on the premises.
With so much going on, Main Street will be worth a visit on this December evening!
