Oakland Library Schedules Book Signing

            The staff at Oakland Public Library invites everyone to join Friends of the Library for Black HIstory Month featuring James Meredith’s book signing, “A Mission From God.” Mr. Meredith was the first African American student to enroll at Ole Miss in September 1962. The program will be held Wednesday, February 11,  beginning at 3 p.m.

  

Sign up Is Underway For Watermelon Pageant

            Sign up now for the 35th annual Watermelon Pageant.  The pageant is a fundraiser for the Junior Auxiliary of Water Valley and will be held Saturday, March 21.  Boys ages 3-6 and girls ages 3-25 are welcome to enter.  Entry fee is $20 and there will be a $5 entry fee at the time of the event. Entry deadline is March 16.  To obtain an entry form ask a member, or email jawvms@gmail.com.  Forms are also available on the JA website, juniorauxiliaryofwatervalley.com

 

Alzheimer’s Disease If Topic At Historical Society Meeting

            The Yalobusha Historical Society will meet Thursday, February 19, at 2 p.m. in its headquarters, the former Coffeeville Presbyterian Church.  The speaker is Stanley McCarver, Oxford and his topic is the Alzheimer’s Disease.

 

Scholarship Committee Sells T-shirts For Funding

            The scholarship committee is selling Dr. Carol Gary t-shirts through Wednesday, Feb. 11. The cost of the t-shirts start at $12 and increases with larger sizes. Children sizes are available as well. The scholarships will be awarded to two graduating WVHS seniors who meet the scholarship’s criteria.

            Last year at a ceremony honoring Dr. Gary’s family, the awards were presented to Hunter Stanford and Montez Hairston. You may come by the Davidson Elementary School office to pick up and turn in your order form!

            Scholarship organizers urge the public to join in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Carol Gray.

  

City Offices Close For Holiday, Garbage Runs As Usual

 

All City of Water Valley offices and departments will be closed Monday, Feb. 16,  to observe President’s Day. Monday’s residential garbage route will run as usual along with commercial route.

 

Registration For Baseball And Softball Starts Saturday

            Magnolia Youth baseball and softball registration will begin Saturday, February 14 and continue through February 28, between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon. Registration is for ages 3-12 and will be held in the Crawford Sports Complex. The fee is $45 per child. 

 

Bobby Hood Band Performs At VFW Saturday Night Dance

            The Bobby Hood Band will provide music for the regular VFW Saturday Night dance on Valentine’s night (February 14). The music will begin at 8  p.m. and conclude at midnight. The dance is held in VFW Post 4100’s Post Home, located at 11535 Highway 315, west of Water Valley. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy a night of fellowship, dancing, and music.
