NEW ALBANY – The Water Valley Blue Devils (1-1) traveled to New Albany on Saturday, Feb. 25, to compete in the Bulldog Classic. The Blue Devils first contest of the day was against the Potts Camp Cardinals, where they struck first in the top of the 1st inning with one run, to take a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals.
Water Valley was able to extend its lead in the top of the 2nd inning, as they added two more runs. The Blue Devils, taking a 3-0 lead over the Cardinals.
Neither team was able to bring a run across in the 3rd inning, as the Blue Devils held onto to their 3-0 lead.
Water Valley was able to pad their lead with three runs in the 4th and 5th innings that would prove to be too much for the Cardinals to overcome.
The Blue Devils earned their first win of the season with the 6-0 victory over Potts Camp, the win gave them a 1-0 record on the young season.
Following the win over Potts Camp, the Blue Devils took on a fellow 3A team, the North Pontotoc Vikings. The Blue Devils struggled against the veteran-led Vikings.
The Vikings were able to score four runs in the top of the first inning and eight runs in the second inning to take an early 12-0 lead over the Blue Devils. North Pontotoc was able to pull away for the 17-1 victory over the Blue Devils. With the loss, Water Valley dropped to 1-1 on the season.
The Blue Devils will be back in action this week, as they travel to Grenada on Friday, March 3, to take on the Grenada Chargers. The junior varsity team plays at 4 and varsity action starts at 6 p.m.
