GRENADA – The Water Valley Blue Devils baseball team traveled to Grenada last Friday, March 3rd, to take on the 5A Grenada Chargers. The Chargers came into the contest with a 2-0 record, the Blue Devils came in with a 1-2 record on the season.
The teams got off to a great start offensively, both plating two runs in the first inning to knot the score at 2-2.
The Blue Devils’ were unable to keep up with Grenada over the next five innings, as Grenada scored four runs and Water Valley added 1. Grenada held a 6-3 lead over Water Valley after six innings. The Blue Devils scored 1 run in the seventh inning, but came up just short falling to the Chargers 6-4.
The Blue Devils were led by 7th Grader Dre McCray who finished the game with an impressive 4-4 performance and he also drove in two RBIs. Junior catcher Ty Varner also had a big game for Water Valley, going 2-3 and driving in 1 RBI.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 1-3 .
Following the loss, the team traveled to Winona on Saturday, March 4, facing off against Ethel and Amanda Elzy in a tournament. The Blue Devils took on the Ethel Tigers in the first contest of the day, a game that turned into a pitching duel early as neither team was able to get on the board in the first few innings.
The Tigers struck first with a three-spot in the bottom of the third inning, giving them a 3-0 lead.
Water Valley didn’t take long to respond, matching Ethel with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning, tying the game up at three midway through the contest.
Ethel was able to plate a run in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead, and the Blue Devils were unable to respond. The 4-3 loss dropped Water Valley to 1-4 on the season. The Blue Devils were led by junior outfielder Gavin Darby, he had a 2-4 performance. 8th Grader Ty Kuykendall led the Blue Devils with 2 RBIs and went 1-3 in the game.
In the second matchup of the tournament, the Blue Devils took on the Amanda Elzy Panthers, earning an impressive 14-4 run rule victory over the Panthers.
Water Valley had three players with a two-hit game against the Panthers, Gavin Darby, Ty Kuykendall, and Taylor Dean. Kuykendall led the Blue Devils with 4 RBIs, Chapel Hyde added 3 RBIs, and Blayne Clark had 2 RBIs against Amanda Elzy.
The win improved the Blue Devils to 2-4 on the season. Water Valley will be back in action on Friday, March 10, as they travel to Bruce to take on the Bruce Trojans.
