Hazel Lee Charley

CHICAGO—Hazel Lee Charley departed this  life on January 3, 2019, in Loyola Hospital at Maywood, Ill.

Born December 28, 1939, Hazel was a daughter of the late Leroy Benson and Clara Chatman Benson of Water Valley. She was joined in holy matrimony to Curtis Charles on February 10,1962. She enjoyed spending tine with her loved ones and talking on the phone with her sister, Joyce. She loved watching the Chicago Bulls on television and various game shows.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Mae Benson; grandparents; several aunts and uncles; two brothers who died as infants; several brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; and one daughter-in-law, Jeanine Buford, who she loved as her own.

Survivors include her devoted husband of 56 years, Curtis Charley; two sons, David Buford of Water Valley and Andre Charley of Muskogee, Okla.; a granddaughter, Davisha Buford of Horn Lake; two grandsons, Eric Lumpkin of Madison, Wisc. and Jere Buford of Chicago; two sisters, Joyce Judson and Mary Ann (Freddie) Folson of Water Valley; three brothers, George L. Benson (Queenie) of Covington, Ga., John Hall (Judy) of Chicago, and Willie Hall (Glenda) of Memphis; three brothers-in-law, Wilson Charley (Sue) of Dixon Mills, Ala., Dwight Charley (Linda) of Butler, Ala., and L. V. Charley (Barbara) of Bellwood, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Minnie Hayes (Douglas) of Dixon Mills, Ala.; eight great-grandchildren; one Goddaughter and one Godson.

  

Funeral services were held in Chicago Thursday, January 10, in her home church, First Baptist Congregational Church. Visitation was held on Saturday, January 12, in Water Valley and her final resting place is Spring Hill Cemetery at Water Valley.

Aubrey Earl Davis

SENATOBIA—Aubrey Earl Davis, age 77, died peacefully Thursday, January 10, 2019, at home with  his family by his side.

Born March 16, 1941, in Water Valley, Aubrey was a son of the late James Harold and Alice Wrenn Davis. He worked over 30 years at Big Yank Manufacturing in Water Valley, starting as a seam press operator and moving his way up to finishing supervisor before going to work for Spring Industries in Sardis where he worked almost 20 years as a sewing machine mechanic. His joys were numerous, including restoring automobiles and houses. Aubrey also loved gardening and helping his neighbors, but his family always held a very special place in his heart.

Visitation was held Monday, January 14, in Seven Oaks Funeral Home at Water Valley from noon to 2 p.m. Services followed at 2 p.m. in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. Randy Bain and Larry Hart officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, with Richard Whiteside, Kevin Whiteside, Nathan Pinkerton, Michael Pinkerton, Kipp Davis, and Earl Davis as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Brasure, Gerald Little, Tommy Jackson,Willie Davis, and Bruce Dahlgren.

Aubrey  is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy Pinkerton Davis of Senatobia; three daughters, Irene Jones (Kevin), Heather Swanson (Brandon), both of Senatobia, and Louise Waters (Shawn) of Hilliard, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Kane Magee, Macey McNail, Tori Ann Lynch, Avery-Claire Buse, Nickki Swanson, Macey Swanson, Trenton Waters, and Allie Waters; and one brother, Ernest Davis of Water Valley.

Along with his parents, Aubrey was preceded in death by one brother, James Harold Davis, Jr., a grandson, Kyle Jones, a nephew, Ernest Davis, Jr., and an uncle that Aubrey had cared for, Frank Coleman Wrenn.

Lottie Wynette Savage Horne

OXFORD—Lottie Wynette Savage Horne, 83, died Saturday, January 12, 2019, in Baptist Memorial Hospital —North Mississippi at Oxford.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 16, at 11 a.m. in Anchor Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Shook officiating. Burial will follow in the Anchor Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service—8:30 a.m until service time.

Born in Lafayette County, Mrs. Horne was a daughter of the late Paul Eugene and Irene Smith Savage. She was a member of Anchor Baptist Church, where she enjoyed being a greeter, a member of the Joy Sunday School Class, and 2018 Mother of the year. She had been a supervisor at Big Yank and a clerk at the Ole Miss Bookstore. Lottie found great joy in cooking for  her large family. She loved babies and children. Along, with her parents, Mrs. Horne was preceded in death by a husband, William “Bill” Bumgardner; a son, Delain Horne; three sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by her husband, William Horne of Oxford; two daughters, Janet Knight (James) of Oxford and Connie Bumgardner of Oxford; three sons, Billy Bumgardner (Shirley) of Water Valley, David Bumgardner of Water Valley, and Stephen E. Horne (Iris) of Clark Summit, Penn.; a sister, Jannie Miller of Bruce; two brothers, Harold Savage of Chicago and Herbie Savage of Water Valley; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Peggye Britt of Oxford.

Memorials in Mrs. Horne’s memory may be made to Anchor Baptist Church, 1009 Hwy. 7, Water Valley, MS 38965.

Robert Horton, Jr.

WATER VALLEY—Robert Horton, Jr., 65, of Water Valley died Friday, January 11, 2019, in Sanctuary Hospice at Tupelo.

Born December 9, 1954, in Coffeeville, Robert was a son of Dorothy Gooch, and the late Robert James Horton. 

Survivors include his wife, Essie Horton of Water Valley; children, Brandy Talley, Jennifer Walton (Michael), and Andrew Horton (Rose), all of Water Valley; his mother, Dorothy Gooch; three sisters, Dorothy Blackburn, Alice Horton, and Neail Cook; and one brother, Andrew Horton.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Horton.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 19, in the Water Valley Civic Auditorium. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Sammy Townes officiating. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Myra Janelle Loar

MEMPHIS—On December 19, 2018, Myra Janelle Loar, 77, became neighbors with the  Lord.

While she will be missed, her family and friends celebrate the life she lived and the relationships she forged, including her partner for 20 years, Ronnie Peavehouse; her children, David Mark Furr and Paula White-Cain; her grandchildren, Bradley Charles Knight, Lauren, and Paul Furr; and five great-grandchildren, to whom she is affectionately rememberer as Mamcap.

 

Born May 3, 1941, in Water Valley, a daughter of  the late Paul and Margie Jones Mayo, she was one of four siblings. Janelle worked her way through four colleges, earning two masters’ degrees. Being a resilient and hard-woking woman she tackled multiple careers in a professional journey that ended with her selling antique goods on Ebay, which she called “junking.” She was passionate about the Grizzlies, Ole Miss football, literary thrillers, and Democratic politics. Never afraid to be the “only” in the midst of “many,” Janelle twirled to her own tune all the way to eternity. 

Her memorial service was held January 15, 2019, at 1 p.m. in the Legends Lounge.

In addition to her parents, Janelle was preceded in death by her siblings, Phil Mayo, Brando “Pee Wee” Mayo, and Margie Dell Mayo.
