Waller Is Memorial Day Speaker

Retired Brigadier General Bill Waller, Jr. will speak at Monday’s Memorial Day observance.

WATER VALLEY – The community is invited to honor our nation’s fallen soldiers and their families  in Monday’s Memorial Service at 11:45 a.m. in Railroad Park on Main Street. Former Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Waller, Jr. will be the speaker at the observance that also includes the rededication of the recently refurbished World War I cannon.

Waller is a native and current resident of Jackson. In addition to serving as a Mississippi Supreme Court Justice for 21 years, Waller attained the rank of Brigadier General, serving as Commander of the 66th Troop Command, Mississippi Army National Guard in Jackson. He is also a Republican candidate for governor in Mississippi.

The observance is jointly coordinated by the American Legion Curtis E. Pass Post and VFW Post 4100. Mickell Dunn, who serves as quartermaster at the VFW and Commander at the American Legion reported that refreshments will be served afterwards at the American Legion.

Dunn also reported that the rededication of the 1917-era cannon follows months of work restoring the relic that has stood on Main Street for almost seven decades.  The cannon was moved from its post last September and returned last month. Numerous businesses and individuals provided support for the restoration.
