Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Arrest

A Safe Exchange Zone has been set up in front of the Yalobusha County Detention Center to provide a location for child custody exchanges, face to face online sales or meetings where one feels the need for recorded video surveillance. The zone is marked with a sign in front of the jail and is under video surveillance all the time.

WATER VALLEY – A Water Valley man faces felony drug charges following a traffic stop last Tuesday, Feb. 25, on the Hwy. 7 bypass just south of Water Valley. Sheriff Mark D. Fulco reported David Brandon Potts, 18, was charged in the joint operation that also included the Water Valley Police Department and agents with Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.

Potts was charged with two counts for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute  after law enforcement officers discovered alleged marijuana and THC vape cartridges in the vehicle. The sheriff reported a gun was in the vehicle.  A 17 year-old juvenile in the vehicle was also turned over to youth court for prosecution.

Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum added that officers from the departments involved spread out to apprehend  the vehicle after receiving the tip. Both department heads reported their officers work together and back each other up on a daily basis.

“Last Friday, we had three deputies tied up on the county line and the city responded to a serious call at the Child Protective Services office for us,” Fulco explained.

“The sheriff constantly offers his assistance to the other agencies in the county,” Mangrum added. “Deputies back up officers in the city when they need it and the officers assist the county when they are tied up on calls,” Mangrum explained.

Other law enforcement activity includes:

• Timothy Turner, 56, was charged with attempted burglary and possession of methamphetamine after Fulco responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on County Road 104. Turner had been in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Correction until Feb. 7 when he was released.
