Search Continues For Escapee

                Ewel William Scott

WATER VALLEY – Yalobusha County Sheriff Mark D. Fulco reported the search continues for an inmate who escaped from the Yalobusha County Detention Center last Wednesday night.

Ewel William Scott, 39, of Enid escaped from the county jail around 9 p.m. and Fulco reported authorities have been a step behind him since then. The sheriff said Scott and another inmate were able to escape from the facility through a door that did not shut. Both men climbed the razor-wire fence but only Scott was able to clear the fence and get away.

“The other inmate was cut up, he had to get stitches,” the sheriff added.

Scott allegedly stole a 1995 Chevrolet at a residence on County Road 436, a couple of miles from the jail. The pickup was discovered at 5:02 p.m. Friday in neighboring Tallahatchie County, off of Hwy 724 a half-mile from the railroad tracks in Enid.

Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly told the Sun Sentinel that the white tailgate of an otherwise red vehicle was spotted in the barn by a passerby.

Fly also said deputies with his department searched the area Friday night, but did not know how much of a head start Scott had.

Fulco said the Mississippi Highway Patrol is also assisting with the search.

Scott is a white male with brown hair and blue eyes, stands about 5’8” tall and weighs around 120 pounds. He was serving time for felony taking of a motor vehicle.

I’m not sure who all knows this guy but he’s apparently pretty good at eluding the authorities. Oddly enough, I and my neighbors in the PeaRidge community of northern Grenada County, believe that this man has been living in the old Bethel Church. There’s been weapons found in there, a makeshift bed, backpack and money…. the person has even cleaned out the church’s food pantry supply. A man, possibly fitting Scott’s description, has been seen running from the building by parishioners of the church. I’ve read all available accounts of searches for this man and realize that there has been a great deal done by other counties to apprehend him. I’m not so sure about the efforts of my own county, as we have seen very little to no presence in the area since they were first notified of the mystery man that is inhabiting the church. Maybe sheriff Phelps or some other sheriff could help our county figure out how to do some searching?

I don’t think anyone is really looking for the guy Steph, they are just waiting on him to make a mistake, like turning himself in, or driving through a……was gonna say roadblock but I don’t think I’ve seen a roadblock in years……..maybe driving into a tree. Seriously, no one is actually out spending time looking for this man. If they were he would have been caught long before now. Hopefully he doesn’t actually hurt someone or kill worse before he slips up and trips over a cop. Now that many people are wearing mask out in public this guy could go for years without being apprehended.
