City Purchases Garbage Cans For Residential Customers

WATER VALLEY – Residential garbage customers in the City of Water Valley will receive garbage cans similar to the ones used in the county in the coming months after aldermen approved a $59,669 bid from Schaefer Systems International to purchase 1,500 cans during the August 4 city meeting.
Mayor Donald Gray reported that 1,500 cans will cover all of the city’s residential garbage accounts. The cans will be shipped to the city in approximately three weeks and city workers will assemble and deliver the cans in the coming months. Customers’ bill will increase $1.30 per month to pay for the cans. The cans have a life expectancy of 15 years and come with a 10-year warranty. Customers will be responsible for damaged or lost cans and aldermen set a $65 replacement fee.
The purchase follows an earlier discussion in March when Street Department Superintendent Mike Scroggins recommended the purchase to improve garbage pickup efficiency. Scroggins explained that the city’s new garbage truck is equipped to dump the garbage cans. He also noted the homemade garbage containers many people use in the city are problematic.

I have 2 cans almost identical to the one the city left on my property today(1-22-21). Why am I being forced to use and pay for the city’s can instead of the ones I paid almost $170 each for?
