Friday Is Deadline To Qualify For School Slots

WATER VALLEY – Friday is the deadline to qualify for school board positions and no candidates have submitted qualifying paperwork at presstime.
There are two school board slots in the Water Valley School District and one slot for the Coffeeville School District that will appear on the November 5 General Election ballot.
The  five-year terms in both school districts are staggered, meaning that typically one position is on the ballot each year. This year there is a second open slot in the Water Valley district for Position 3 following a vacancy. The Water Valley School Board of Trustees appointed Pierce Epes to fill the vacancy during 2020. Epes, who served as Position 3 board member for 10 years prior to the appointment, reported he will not run for the position.
Position 4 is the second slot in the Water Valley School District that will be on the November ballot. Incumbent Taylor Trusty, who has served three five-year terms, also told the Herald he has no plans to run for re-election.
In the Coffeeville School District, Position Four will be on the November ballot. Larry Bland currently serves in the position.
Both school districts are divided into five positions, or subdistricts, and are not the same as supervisor districts in the county.
The deadline to qualify  is at 5 p.m. Friday and candidates must obtain 50 signatures from registered voters who reside in the position in which they are running in order to qualify. Circuit Clerk Daryl Burney reported that anyone interested in finding out which district they reside in can contact his office in Water Valley at (662) 473-1341 or Coffeeville at (662) 675-8187.
Burney also cautioned candidates not to wait until the last minute to submit the qualifying paperwork to his office, as the 50 signatures have to be verified to ensure they are registered voters in the same district the candidate is running. Citing an example, Burney explained if a candidate brings the paperwork in Friday afternoon and some signatures are not valid, there many not be time to resubmit the paperwork with the required 50 signatures before the 5 p.m. deadline.
