WATER VALLEY – Yalobusha County Circuit Clerk reported that Rhonda Burchett qualified for the Position 5 school board seat in the Water Valley School District and Mitch Steen qualified for the Position 5 school board seat in the Coffeeville School District.
School board elections are on the General Election ballot each November, but Burney reported that with only one candidate qualifying in each position, the races can be omitted from the ballot. This means with no other races scheduled for the November ballot, voters will not go to the polls again this year.
Burchett and Steen will take office for five-year terms in January. Burchett will succeed Chris Terry, who has served almost a decade on the school board. Steen will succeed Todd Hughes in the Coffeeville School District.
Last Friday, Sept. 3, was the deadline to qualify for the position.
In order to qualify the candidates had to obtain 50 signatures from registered voters who reside in the area of the school district they will represent. There are five districts in each school district, which are equally divided based on the population of each district.
