This week was a little hectic for most students. Announcements and due dates were flying all over the place, and mixing in the start of new athletic seasons along with new classes added to the chaos. It actually felt like a normal school week because we were at school consistently for four days straight which was not the case last week.
The Valley Views Annual staff is in high gear as they are getting in senior portraits, ads and quotes. Each year the seniors get to choose a quote that goes along with their portrait in the yearbook. The quotes can be anything the students want including funny memories, words from their teachers or friends, or a quote from their favorite author or movie. The staff is busy preparing for spring sports pages, events, and the Who’s Who spreads. One of the annual staff’s favorite things is choosing the Who’s Who categories. Who’s Who includes fun superlatives to be featured in the yearbook such as “most intelligent” or “most likely to bring the best snacks.” Students nominate peers from their class and then vote for the student who matches the description best. Yearbooks are on sale now for $65 and can be bought from Mrs. Koshenina at any time.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes club is excited to host their first ever “Courts of Christ.” Courts of Christ is a night where all students are welcome to come and dig into the word of the Lord and worship without borders. Students are encouraged to be there and fellowship with their friends on the basketball court at the Water Valley High School gym on the night of February 16, beginning at 7 p.m.
The Blue Devil basketball program had its pink out game on January 21. The crowd and coaches wore pink for their Coaches vs. Cancer theme, honoring those who fight and have fought cancer. Unfortunately, both teams faced a setback against Booneville.
The Blue Devils also played Eupora on January 22. This was a special night for the senior players because it was their senior night. The players were recognized with their families for their commitment and hard work over the years.
KaNiyah Kuykendall has played as a Lady Devil for six years and when asked about the basketball program she stated, “Being a Lady Devil basketball player has meant the most to me mainly because of the bond our whole team has shared. I will miss the caring teammates and the feeling of home we created in our team, coaches, practices, and games.”
The boys and girls team came out with victories over Eupora, which brought the guy’s coach, Chris Yancy, to his 200th career win.
The powerlifting teams were busy this week as well. The girls competed on Friday night, taking home many first, second, and third place individual wins.
The girls were most excited when they received the first place trophy for their efforts as a team. “Winning the first place trophy meant that all of our hard work was definitely paying off, and that we can do anything when we work as a team,” expresses Chloe Burrows, senior powerlifter.
The boys team competed Saturday, also taking home many first, second and third places medals. Overall, the boys placed second. Both the guys and girls on the teams are excited to continue their season and meet their goals along the way.
Life for students is getting busy again and this week proves it. However, whenever students are busy, it almost always means they are also laughing a lot and having fun in the midst of it. So, here’s to many more busy, laughter-filled weeks in this semester.
