The Double Decker Festival was this past weekend in Oxford. It was the most well attended Double Decker in all of the city’s 25-year history of hosting the event. After two miserable years of isolation, people were clearly eager to get out in the beautiful spring weather and be together. The citizens of Oxford who voted in their tourism tax 30 years ago should pat themselves on the back for their continued gift to the town. I’d love to see a rundown of the numbers on how much Oxford’s tourism tax earned them on that one, single Saturday.
Clearly, we aren’t like Oxford. We’re small and we don’t have a University. But, people like small! They think it’s cool and novel. They don’t realize it’s actually fairly boring most of the time and there’s no reason for us to tell them otherwise. As a town, we should collectively make a pact to keep that fact a secret. Let them continue to think small town life is cute! They can travel here for our small-town baseball/softball tournaments, our small-town Watermelon Festivals, our small-town Main Street events and stay at our lovely, small-town Airbnbs. And we can small-town tax them.
Will I ever stop talking about the possibilities of tourism tax? Not likely. But for now, I’ll show some mercy on my readers and change the subject to my other favorite topic.
The PigSaver now carries sushi! I haven’t seen it in real life yet but my friend sent me a picture yesterday. What a day! I remember, years ago, when PigSaver got avocados! And herbs! I also remember when they got tofu and then cold smoked salmon. And, more recently, prosciutto! I’m realizing that this list of foods I’m impressed by makes me sound very bougie but the actuality is that I’m most often buying eggs, low-carb tortillas and bagged lettuce mix.
When I first moved here, the grocery store had ashtrays at the end of each aisle and old school veterans were smoking while buying beans. I also remember the several different times over the years that PigSaver has been forced to put up printed out signs on the front doors stating that pets aren’t allowed in the grocery store. It’s touching that the sign is in a playful font and apologetic. There’s no more smoking vets but the pet signs and beans are still there. Some things change, some things stay the same.
In other grocery store news, the BTC Café is up and running again! I used to work with Yolanda Ramsey (BTC’s new head cook) a long time ago. When Alexe told me Yolanda was on deck to cook I knew we were all in for a treat.
Her Landi Salad is salad perfection. If you’ve had it – then you know. I would love to give my reviews of all the other items on the menu but I just keep getting the Landi Salad. I can’t stop. I stole a few bites of my kid’s Catfish Po’Boy and it was terrific. The pickles-to-poboy ratio is what really makes it shine.
I’m happy to have the BTC Café open again and look forward to the day, sometime in the future, when the Landi Salad can earn us 20 cents off a tourist.
