The end of the school year is most students’ favorite time because classes wind down, final grades are put in the book (and hopefully pull averages up), and summer is right around the corner.
This week at school was Teacher Appreciation Week! Students thanked their teachers for all the hard work they put in day after day. The teachers at WVHS and WVJH deserve a big thank you for all the seen and unseen work they do, for all the care and understanding they have for their students, and for all the ways they brighten up a student’s day – either by simply encouraging the student or by trying to incorporate “our slang” into their vocabulary and making the class erupt in laughter. We are so appreciative of our faculty at school and cannot thank them enough for all they do for us!
Seniors received their caps and gowns this week and the fact that they are graduating in a few short weeks really sunk in. All seniors gathered in the cafeteria on May 2 to celebrate their college and career choices by wearing shirts of their respective college or career and to take home their caps and gowns. Seniors were able to congratulate their friends and classmates on their future decisions and spend a few more moments together as a class before exemptions and graduation.

The baseball program played their first game in the third round of playoffs on May 6 against Booneville at home, rival Blue Devils by one point. The community came out to support the team and the student section went wild to cheer on their friends. The boys then suffered a loss to Booneville Saturday, taking the third round of playoffs to a final third game on May 9. The Blue Devils ended their season against Booneville in the third game of the playoffs. This season was a successful one for the Devils and they fought hard until the end. The team will miss their senior leaders and are so appreciative for all they have contributed over the years.
It is exciting to see students come together in excitement over summer vacations, exemption lists, college plans, next year’s sports seasons, and more. It is also really easy to miss the “right now moments” in the midst of the eagerness and anticipation of the future.
So, I challenge not just my friends and students at WVHS but also anyone reading this today to stop wishing for the future to get here or to stop worrying about what is next. I challenge you to enjoy the moments right in front of you, soaking it all in because it will never be like that moment again.
