Years in the making, Calvin Hawkins displays his book on African American history, “Under the Dusty Sand.” He has a book signing scheduled Saturday, June 18, at Fountain Square in Water Valley. This book provides insight ingenuity of the principal African American pilgrims in Yalobusha County.
Increase Your Knowledge Group announces a book signing for “Under the Dusty Sand” written by Calvin Hawkins. The signing date will be on Saturday, June 18, beginning at 10 a.m and ending at 3 p.m. at the Fountain Square on Frostland Drive in Water Valley.
The agenda includes Hawkins speaking about the story behind the book, followed by guest speakers from the community. Special guests will include Ollie Beth Whiting, Martree Horton and Earnestine Tolbert – these ladies integrated Coffeeville High School in 1967.
Grant Thompson will present a slideshow presentation of “The History of Water Valley.” There will be also be other community guests speaking through out the day.
Hawkins, a Water Valley native, has worked for years gathering information for the book that provides a historical account of African Americans in Yalobusha County from 1870-1970. The account starts at the beginning with the first settlers and continues through the first churches, schools, ministers, teachers, and others who made an impact on the world. This book is a must have for all households.
